Big Green Lake is the deepest inland lake in the state. The lake has an average depth of 104 feet and near the western end of the lake depths reach 236 feet. The lake itself has a shore length of 24.8 miles (7.3 miles long & 2 miles wide) and the surface water area is 7,346 acres. The lake is 95% spring fed and empties into the Fox River through Puckyan River. The principle inlet is Silver Creek.
During the summer months you will see swimmers, divers, pontoon boats, catamarans, ski boats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks and abundant wildlife. In the winter months you will be amazed at the ice shanty’s, as well as four wheelers, snow mobiles and even ice boats that grace the ice.
This lake is listed as a “quality fishing opportunities lake”, and it is managed for quality fishing. Green Lake is truly a sportsman’s paradise! Walleye, Muskie, Largemouth Bass, Pan fish, Smallmouth Bass, Catfish, Bluegill, Northern Pike, Lake Trout & Perch are just some of the freshwater favorites. The fishing continues into the winter months and is particularly good for Perch, though your familiar summer favorites can also be found under the ice. You can find some truly impressive fish on Big Green Lake year round!
Fishing Seasons
Lake Trout – Opens the first Saturday of January thru September 30th.
Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Brown Trout and Walleye - Opens first Saturday of May until March 1st.
Muskellunge – Opens first Saturday of May through November 30th.
Pan fish, Cisco, White Bass, Catfish – Open year round.

· Motor trolling is permitted on Big Green Lake and an Inland trout stamp is required if fishing for trout of any kind.
Big Green is bordered by Highways 73 & 23, County roads K & A.

Little Green Lake is located just a few miles south of Big Green Lake in Green Lake County (Highway 44 north of Markesan. It is known for the mighty Muskellunge. The surface water area is 466 acres, shore length is 4.2 miles with a maximum depth of 28 feet and average of 10 feet. It hosts Muskie, Northern Pike, Walleye and Pan fish. Access sites are plentiful as there are 3 boat launches available to the public, numerous campsites and bait and tackle. In the winter Little Green offers snowmobiling where you can ride the scenic trails of Green Lake County.
Lake Puckaway is located off Highway B west of Highway 73 south of Princeton. The surface water area is 5,039 acres, shore length is 27.6 miles with a maximum depth of 5 feet and average of 3 feet. Puckaway contains a top tier fishery, don’t let the shallow depths fool you. A state record Northern was pulled from this lake in 1952 and the record still stands more than half a century later. Catches include: Walleye, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass and Pan fish. There are eight public access sites for boats as well as several private fee-charging accesses.
If nature is your preference to hunting and fishing, you won’t find a more beautiful natural area than Lake Puckaway. Great blue herons and double-crested cormorants nest in the middle of the lake and rare Forster’s terns make the cane beds their home in the summer. Bald Eagle nests can be spotted by boat on the dredge bank island as well as Ospreys and you can hear Sandhill Cranes calling from the marshlands. A birdwatchers paradise! Many mammals make the area their home and they include: raccoons, foxes, whitetail deer, muskrats, beaver and otter.
Lake Puckaway is also ideal for swimming with its shallow waters and hard sand bottom.

Other Lakes and Rivers abound in and around the Green Lake County area:
Grand Lake – located on Highway 44, ¼ mile north of Kingston.
Big/Little Twin Lake & Spring (Spirit) Lake – Access to Big & Little Twin is off County Road K. You’ll have to take a canoe from Big to Little Twin. Known for its Largemouth Bass and Bluegills. The surface water area for both Big & Little Twin is 112 acres with a shore length of 4.1 miles. Spring Lake is a stone’s throw south of Big Green Lake. There are 72 acres of surface water area and 2.2 miles of shore length. You can find Bluegills along with Largemouth Bass, Walleyes and Northern Pike. Access is near the center of the south shore, off a town road from County Road K.
Spring Lake (Kingston) – At Spring Lake County Park on County FF, 2 ½ miles west of Kingston, also public swimming beach.
Fox River – Accessible for canoes in either Princeton or Berlin. In Princeton there is an access just north of town on River Road or County Highway D. There is also access south of Berlin and Princeton along the river itself.
Puchyan River – Accessible for canoes from downtown Green Lake, across from the Historical Society, or in lower town, at the bridge past the Dartford Inn.
Fox Lake & Lake Emily – These two northern Dodge County lakes offer contrasting but good fisheries. Fox Lake has a surface water area of 2,625 acres, shore length of 17.9 miles and has a maximum depth of 19 feet and average of 7 feet. Walleye, Northern Pike & Pan fish can be found here. Lake Emily has a surface water area of 268 acres, shore length of 2.9 miles with a maximum depth of 10 feet. Northerns, Largemouth Bass and Pan fish can be found in this lake.
Buffalo Lake – Located in Marquette County the surface water area is 2,210 acres, shore length is 24.9 miles with a maximum depth of 8 feet and average of 5 feet. Walleye, Muskellunge, Largemouth Bass and Pan fish are found here. There are numerous public and private launch sites are scattered along its shores. You will also find plenty of amenities in the city of Montello.
